history(Minimum of 2 paragraphs:
Remus Lupin was born in 1959 to a wizarding family. A werewolf for many years, he looks older than he is and, at first glance, appears thin and weak. As his story progresses, though, it becomes obvious that despite outward appearances Lupin is a strong man and powerful wizard. He was skilled enough to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, and he is one of the few who can perform controlled wandless magic.
As a young boy, Lupin was bitten by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. His parents tried everything they could to help him, but there was no cure for his lycanthropy, leading them to think that he would not be able to attend Hogwarts because other parents would not want their children around a werewolf. Fortunately for them, however, Dumbledore became headmaster of Hogwarts, and together they devised a way for Lupin to attend school in spite of his condition.
In preparation for Lupin's arrival at school in September 1970, Dumbledore had a Whomping Willow planted on Hogwarts grounds. The tree attacked all who approached it and only stilled when a knot on its trunk was prodded. This menacing plant was strategically placed; it guarded an underground tunnel that lead to the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade, where Lupin would go once a month to transform. This plan was designed for the safety of both the students and Lupin himself. His transformations were so violent when he was younger that the villagers of Hogsmeade heard screams coming from the Shrieking Shack and assumed the building was haunted by some extremely violent spirits. Dumbledore allowed this rumor to exist unchallenged, as it kept people away from the shack and allowed Remus the opportunity to transform in solitude.
Lupin - perhaps as a result of his condition - made no friends until he began attending the school. There he met and befriended James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew - the group who later became known as the Marauders. Another first year Remus grew to be very fond of was Lily Evans, a Muggle-born girl who James became infatuated with and later married.
Lupin was so grateful to have friends that he did not tell them about his condition for fear they would abandon him if they knew the truth. In order to hide his condition from them, Lupin used a variety of lies and excuses, trying to explain away his monthly absences. Despite his efforts to conceal the truth, however, the others worked out what was happening. Far from abandoning him, however, the three attempted to become Animagi so they could be with Lupin during his transformations. They finally managed this in their fifth year. Under their influence, Remus became less wolfish, and together they ventured around Hogsmeade, Hogwarts, and the grounds. James and Sirius turned into animals large enough to control a werewolf (a stag and large dog, respectively), so they were able to explore the village every full moon in relative safety.
Also during their fifth year (1974-1975), Lupin became a Hogwarts Prefect; a responsibility given to him in the hope he would be able to exert some control over James and Sirius, who were the ringleaders of their gang, the Marauders. Unfortunately, he failed in this task.
The Marauders were rivals with the Slytherin student Severus Snape. Snape, who was fascinated with the Dark Arts, was also very interested in Lupin's monthly disappearances. He often lurked around trying to find reasons to get the Marauders expelled, and in return, James and Sirius bullied him mercilessly. Lupin never interceded on Snape's behalf nor told James and Sirius that they were wrong, and the guilt of this inaction stayed with Lupin through to his adult life.
Around this time the Marauders used their extensive knowledge of Hogwarts and the grounds (derived from their monthly adventures) to create the Marauders Map. Truly an extraordinary magical item, the Marauders Map showed not just every part of the Hogwarts castle and grounds the Marauders were aware of, but the exact location of every person in Hogwarts at the time. The Map bore their nicknames: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs (Remus, Peter, Sirius, and James, respectively). The nicknames were indicative of the shapes assumed by each of them during their monthly adventures.
One evening during their sixth year, Snape saw Madam Pomfrey escorting Lupin out of the castle as she did each month. Acting on information given to him by Sirius on how to still the Whomping Willow, Snape ventured into the tunnel and glimpsed a fully transformed Lupin before being pulled to safety by James. Snape would never truly forget the prank Sirius played on him nor forgive James for saving his life (therefore indebting Snape to someone he hated). Snape would also never forget the truth about Lupin's identity, something he would use against Lupin in later life.
